When I think about how captivated I was about a book which was filled with details about WEATHER, I have to say the writing was superb.
An unreasonably, unbelievable story...how does one survive 227 days as a castaway at sea? I'm a little slow in discovering this book. I may not have given it more than 3 stars, it seemed a little tedious. I was learning a little about animal care/training. But then the ending!! Wow! The last 5 or so chapters make this all worth reading. In the words of the goodreads review, "wonderful display of storytelling verve". LTJOAM: "Normal Sank" "High calls low and Low calls high. The lower you are, the higher your mind will want to soar." "Love is hard to believe--ask any lover; Life is hard to believe--ask any scientist; God is hard to believe--ask any believer. Be excessively reasonable and risk throwing out the universe with the 'bath water'."
I picked up this book because I thought there would be some interesting insights into the intersection of women in the strict Islamic culture of post-Revolutionary Iran reading classics of the Western canon. But the book never delivers on that; perhaps my own expectations of what I thought the book should be about messed with my ability to appreciate it for what it was.
