** spoiler alert ** After finishing "Wicked Lovely," I had a feeling of enjoying it in spite of myself. At face value, the story seems like a very simple urban fantasy, complete with a protagonist who manages to attend high school and see fairies at the same time. But the characters constantly surprised me. Who would ever expect a teenage girl to turn down a fairy king and happily ever after in favor of a pierced, tattooed human? And when she's told she has no choice but to marry the king, she still manages to hold on to her boyfriend, despite the contradictions that creates. The ending is daring, especially when you can look at it from an adult viewpoint and I think it works amazingly well. I definitely will be reading the sequel, if only to find out if the characters can actually make it work.
