Retro bir his ile renkli geometrik sanat, en başarılı donut dükkanına sahip olmak için yarışan iki fırıncının bu dikkatli masalını göstermektedir. As someone who grew up in California's Central Valley, this is a book I wish I'd read when I was still living there. I worked with girls from Laos, and there was always some kind of mystery about them - they didn't get to keep their paychecks from McDonald's like I did, they were always happy to meet new customers and had wicked senses of humor. I'd heard the stories about the Hmong: a family who had a terrible fire in their apartment after trying to burn wood in their oven - and wondered how anyone could be so ignorant. This book answered that question and explained the entire Hmong world-view, their escape from Laos, their strong family bonds, their religious beliefs, their sudden exposure to modern-day America and how they adjusted - or didn't - to it. The barrier between their culture and ours almost seems insurmountable, and I can only hope that more people will take the time to get into their mindset, especially if it can prevent the same kind of medical frustration as experienced by all of Lia's doctors.
